Boy Scout Troop 159, in Succasunna, not long ago did something it never did in the past: The group selected 3 Eagle Scouts at the same time, in accordance with its publicist, Marion Berge.

Scouts Nicholas Sherman, Daniel Chadourne and David Barnes “accomplished an outstanding number of service projects, leadership roles and merit badges in order to make the Eagle position,” explained Berge. She noted that, since the Eagle Scout Award came to be in 1912, “only 2.01 % of suitable Scouts have gained Scouting’s top recognition.”

Sherman, received 26 merit badges as a boy scout and has served as the troop’s webmaster since 2011, stated Berge. He is even the troop’s Order of the Arrow representative, she mentioned.

“He was honored a Bronze Palm for having earned 5 merit badges beyond the 21 necessary for the status of Eagle,” stated Berge. “He accomplished Brotherhood in Order of the Arrow and has twice been given the Gold SERV award for volunteer work and gained the Pope Pius XII Award.”

Furthermore, Sherman is part of the Boy Scout Jazz Ensemble and an appointed associate of the Patriots Path Council Youth Executive Committee.

For his Eagle Service Project, Sherman made a “Lab of Inquiry” at Eisenhower Middle School. “He transformed a former media center into a place where students could investigate educational matters that they couldn’t otherwise perform inside the traditional class room,” said Berge. “To do this, he made 5 separate areas involving STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related subjects and team development activities: a chess area, LEGO/robotic area; computer/study/foreign language work area; a team building activities place and one for games/brain teasers/analytical thinking manipulatives.”

Sherman is a senior at the Academy of Mathematics, Science & Engineering where he is a member of the varsity fencing team and co-squad head of the sabre team, according to Berge. He is also co-founder, past president and existing vice president of the school chess team and a member of the Math Club and Technology Student Association. In addition, Sherman is a National Merit Semifinalist and a member of the National Honor Society and five academic honor communities: Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish and English. He plans on attending college to study Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, said Berge.

Chadourne has gained Thirty merit badges as a boy scout, mentioned Berge. “Daniel relished the many camping visits to Split Rock, Ten Mile River, Ressica Falls and the Appalachian Trail,” she stated, adding that Chadourne “also loved camp at both Camp Somers and Camp Winnebago, focusing on a lot of his merit badges, including all three of the shooting sports badges.”

Berge stated Chadourne “tested himself to earn the bicycling merit badge” which required A hundred and fifty miles of bicycling spread out over seven individual excursions including a single, 50-mile timed trip.

Chadourne has held numerous leadership positions within the troop including Scribe, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Troop Guide and Troop Instructor, mentioned Berge. She said he was picked to the Order of the Arrow in 2013 and pointed out he also takes part in the Boy Scout Band.

For his Eagle project, Daniel restored the beach volleyball courts at Horseshoe Lake Park, claimed Berge. “He obtained 50 tons of fresh sand, for both courts, donated by County Concrete,” she mentioned. “He restored the PVC pipe outlining the courts, repositioned the netting, repaired and painted 2 benches and created and constructed a brand new scoreboard for each court.”

Barnes has earned Thirty-two merit badges, claimed Berge. “He attended as many journeys and activities as possible,” she mentioned. “He participated in camp at both Camp Somers and Winnebago where by he gained many of his merit badges.”

Barnes achieved essential Boy Scout awards and coaching, like the World Conservation Award, EDGE Training, Order of the Arrow and NYLT training. He also worked at numerous leadership positions including Librarian, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.

Barnes has been in the Boy Scout Band ever since Fifth Grade, she claimed. “At the Patriot’s Path Council level, he’s been a National Youth Leadership Training Staff member for the last 2 years,” mentioned Berge.

Berge, for his his Eagle Scout Project, refurbished the Roxbury High School Marching Band equipment coach. He modified it from being “an empty bus without any seats to a bus with enough carpeted shelving to securely maintain every one of the musical instruments without one moving about,” mentioned Berge.

“This bus is used to transport musical instruments from Roxbury High School to various Marching Band competitions and also away soccer games.”
